This compact mini-course is designed for beginner and intermediate darbuka players who want to quickly strengthen their 2/4 groove vocabulary and feel more confident while accompanying an ensemble or orchestra.

The course begins with an Introduction lesson, where Hakan demonstrates the fundamentals of Split-Hand finger technique together with his student Anton. This short session helps you build clean movements, comfortable hand positioning, and a strong foundation before entering the groove modules.

Throughout the course, Hakan presents multiple 2/4 groove variations enriched with ornaments, accents, and Split-Hand comfort techniques that help you achieve smoother, more controlled, and more expressive playing. Most grooves in this course are Hakan’s own creations, and some lessons are performed together with Anton, providing both an instructor and a real-time learning perspective.

Instructor

Hakan Kaya

Born into a musician family in Istanbul, Hakan Kaya began his musical journey at an early age within the rich rhythm traditions of Anatolian folk music. He received his first percussion training from İzzet Kızıl and Şenol Cümbüşlü, and at the age of 16 studied Indian rhythms and Tabla in Varanasi, India. For many years, Hakan Kaya has performed with leading musicians and taught Darbuka, Riq, Frame Drum, and Def to students from around the world. In 2013, he became the first Turkish percussionist to release an instructional darbuka DVD. Today, his teaching blends tradition, technique, and musical expression, shaped by over 25 years of playing and teaching experience.
